Fall 2015 is a great time to be looking at American politics. Among other things

  • Some two dozen Republicans and Democrats are actively pursuing their party’s nomination for the presidential election.
  • Underlying the political maneuvering is an influx of funds, much of it “dark money,” allowing supporters to hide their identities.
  • Current President Barack Obama continues to battle Congress (including members of his own party) over foreign affairs, unilateral executive powers, and social and economic policies.
  • The Supreme Court will be hearing major cases on voter representation, the power of public-sector labor unions, and affirmative action in higher education.

These events and issues form the background and topics for the contributors to this blog—the students in my American Politics class. In addition, we will be focusing on what the current political season might mean and could mean to our young citizens—in particular those in the 18 to 24 age range.
